Spiffies® are individually packaged towelettes that have been saturated in a xylitol solution. The towelettes can be used to clean babies’ first teeth without using a tooth-brush. The towelettes contain a clinically significant amount of xylitol, which is a natural ingredient that prevents cavities.
Here’s the thought behind Spiffies® and why they work:
Certain bacteria (including cavity and strep causing Streptococcus Mutans) adhere to the surface of the teeth. When foods containing ordinary sugar or carbohydrates are eaten, the sugar or carbohydrate gives the bacteria energy to multiply and start producing acids. Cavities begin to form as acids start dissolving the calcium and phosphate that form the tooth's surface. This process continues for about 30 minutes before the acid is finally neutralized. Every time sugar or carbohydrates are consumed, the process begins again. Therefore, how often you eat sugar or carbohydrates becomes very important. Also, another very important factor in causing cavities is how many cavity-causing bacteria reside in your mouth.
Xylitol is effective because it stops the acid attack. Unlike other sugars and carbohydrates, the cavity causing bacteria are unable to digest xylitol so their growth is reduced. Acid is not formed and the decay process does not begin. When xylitol is in the mouth, the decay causing bacteria can be reduced as much as 90%. Xylitol also makes it hard for bacteria to adhere to the enamel of the teeth, resulting in a decrease in plaque. Xylitol stimulates saliva secretion, which in turn can help reverse beginning decay. Saliva containing xylitol is more alkaline, allowing calcium and phosphate to re-enter those areas of enamel on the teeth.
Xylitol is safe for everyone to use. It has been FDA approved as a dietary food additive since 1963. It is ideal for diabetics because of the low glycemic index of 7, where sugar is 70. Xylitol is metabolized without using insulin. Another great benefit of xylitol is that it has been shown to decrease middle ear infections by 40%.
Spiffies have a double action –each time you use one, you are removing plaque from the teeth, by wiping and at the same time, coating the teeth, gums and tongue with xylitol to prevent the bad bacteria from growing. We have a clinically significant amount of xylitol in Spiffies® --important because when Spiffies® wipes out the bad bacteria they unable to grow back.
